Why Go to Tanzania?
Hardly any other destination on Earth can offer a wildlife encounter to match the annual Wildebeest Migration. Forming the centrepiece of most Tanzania safari itineraries, the Migration is a mind-blowing display of nature at her most extraordinary.
Thanks to a mild climate, wide open spaces and an abundance of wildlife in heavyweight destinations like the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire, Tanzania delivers sensational safari experiences any time of the year.
From watching thousands of grunting wildebeest dodge massive crocodiles during the Migration’s perilous river crossings to seeing each member of the Big 5, Tanzania offers the kind of experiences found nowhere else on Earth.
Despite some camps being situated in remote wilderness locations, they still offer superb amenities like private plunge pools, spas and gyms. You may even find silver chandeliers and copper bathtubs in the middle of the Serengeti.
There are dedicated airports that service most of Tanzania’s national parks and game reserves. The best Tanzania safaris are fly-in itineraries, which eliminate the need for long road transfers – meaning more time on safari!
Regular flights and accessibility make it easy to combine your Tanzania safari with a once-in-a-lifetime gorilla trekking adventure in Rwanda or Uganda. The same goes for capping your trip in a tropical paradise like Zanzibar.
Mountain Trekking
Mount Kilimanjaro Trekking
Africa’s highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro, rises from lush, grassy plains and towers over the land. Its snow-capped peak is a sight to behold. Climbing Kilimanjaro is surprisingly easy, and standing on the roof of Africa is a life-changing experience.
We are the travel entity with a passion of sharing Tanzania your way. Whether you are looking for the thrill of Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, we can guide you on an adventure you will never forget. There are many adventures that await you in Tanzania with Kilimanjaro Heroes Adventures. Feel the thunder, catch the wonder!
Kilimanjaro Trekking Route
The Marangu Route, also known as the Coca-Cola Route, is more popular because it can be completed in a few days and has permanent sleep huts at the campsites. Given its gradual slope and direct path, this is considered one of the easiest routes to the summit. But since the trip is only 5 days long, acclimatization may be a little more difficult. While you enjoy the challenge of climbing Kilimanjaro, our expert guides will ensure that everything runs smoothly from start to finish.
The Umbwe route is Mount Kilimanjaro’s most difficult and challenging route, as well as one of the shortest routes to the Southern Glaciers and the Western Breach. This is ideal for hikers who want to take on a true climbing challenge. It is a quiet, rarely traveled path that can be both challenging and rewarding. This is the route to take if you want to test yourself on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro away from the crowds found on the more popular trails.
After the Marangu route, the Rongai route is the most popular and easiest Mount Kilimanjaro climbing route. Because of its remoteness and reliance on acclimatization, the route is less frequently used. This is the only way to approach Uhuru Peak from the mountain’s north side and descend via the Marangu route.
If you want to climb Mount Kilimanjaro for the first time and want to have a wonderful time, this is the route we recommend. Trekking through the Machame route, also known as the “Whisky route,” will increase your chances of reaching Africa’s highest point. The Machame route is steeper in some places than other routes such as Marangu, Rongai, and Lemosho, Because of its success rates and popularity, the Machame route is the busiest of all Kilimanjaro routes.
As a newer route, it is more remote and undoubtedly more beautiful, but it is slightly longer and more expensive. It begins on the mountain’s western side, a longer drive from town, at the Londorossi Gate, and was introduced as an alternative to the Shira route. On day 3, it crosses the Shira Plateau to connect with the Machame Route at Lava Tower, then descends via the Southern Circuit to Barranco Valley. You might be fortunate enough to see a buffalo, elephant, or other game. This route has a higher summit success rate because it allows for more time for acclimatization.
The Kilimanjaro Northern Circuit Route is an unforgettable adventure. This relatively new route ascends Kilimanjaro’s more scenic and tranquil western slope before traversing nearly the entire mountain to the summit. Because there are almost no other groups on the northern face, this is without a doubt one of the most scenic and peaceful journeys up Africa’s highest point. The first three days of the ascent follow the same path as the Lemosho Route.
Other Mountain Trekking
Mount Meru is an active stratovolcano in Tanzania that stands 4,566 meters above sea level and serves as the centerpiece of Arusha National Park. Although not as high as Kilimanjaro, the mountain is equally difficult. Mount Meru is the sixth-highest mountain in Africa and the second-highest in Tanzania and is known for its massive cliffs, lush green surroundings, and abundant wildlife. Mount Meru makes up for its lack of height with difficulty. As a result, prior climbing experience is required.
In Maasai, “Oldoinyo Lengai” means “The Mountain of God.” It stands 2962 meters above sea level and provides direct views into the caldera of Tanzania’s only officially certified active volcano and the world’s only carbonatite volcano; eruption records have been kept since 1883, with the largest ash depositing 100 kilometers away in Loliondo on the Kenyan border to the northwest. It is located in northern Tanzania, just south of Lake Natron in the Rift Valley, in the heart of Maasai country, and is considered a sacred mountain by the Maasai
From the Migration to the Big 5 and Tropical Beaches
Safari happens almost everywhere you look in Tanzania. It’s been a way of life in East Africa’s second-largest country for decades. Few destinations in Africa can rival Tanzania’s diversity of wildlife and landscapes. From the classic savannah destinations of the Serengeti, Tarangire and Ngorongoro Crater to the beaches and coral reefs of Zanzibar, a Tanzania safari delivers one massive experience after another.
Top Safari Destinations in Tanzania
Serengeti National Park
Home to one of the world’s greatest concentrations of wildlife and the majority of the Wildebeest Migration, the Serengeti National Park is Tanzania’s flagship conservation area and a must-do for first-time and returning safari goers alike. The park’s astonishing density of wildlife offers a spectacular safari experience no matter what time of the year you visit, and the wide-open plains and mild climate mean that vegetation is never too dense to see animals.
Highlights
Ngorongoro Crater
Created about 3 million years ago when a massive volcano exploded and collapsed on itself, the Ngorongoro Crater is the largest intact volcanic caldera on Earth. It’s one of Africa’s most spectacular natural wonders, supporting over 25 000 animals – including the Big 5. A diverse ecosystem of savannah, lakes and forest, the crater is renowned for its geological splendour, out-of-this-world cliff-top accommodation, and delivering East Africa’s most reliable Big 5 game viewing.
Highlights
Lake Manyara National Park
Although this national park is small by African standards, it boasts a tremendous diversity of habitats and animals – especially birds. Its namesake attracts a great array of aquatic birds while the evergreen forests are equally productive. It’s also one of the best places to spot scarce tree-climbing lions. Lake Manyara is a beautiful park and conveniently located along Tanzania famous northern safari route.
Highlights
Tarangire National Park
Famous for its baobabs and massive elephant herds, Tarangire is the fourth and final park on Tanzania’s renowned northern safari circuit. The northern part of Tarangire is dominated by the perennial Tarangire River, which attracts colossal herds of elephants during the dry season (June to October). The lesser-visited south is home to a series of vast swamps and wetlands that support a wide variety of wild animals.
Highlights
Consider Adding …
Part of the lesser-known Southern Tanzania safari region, Ruaha and Selous are beautifully wild. Enormous in size and filled to the brim with wildlife, these areas offer sensational safari experiences with an intimate feel. Both are vast, undiscovered and untouched wilderness areas, that are little-visited by safari-goers.
Another bucket-list destination and a must-add to any Serengeti safari, Kenya’s Masai Mara is a sanctuary for an abundance of animals like elephant, buffalo, zebra, giraffe, hyena and the Mara’s famous big cats: lion, leopard and cheetah. It’s also an important stopover for the Wildebeest Migration between about July and November.
No other wildlife encounter can rival sitting with endangered gorillas in their natural habitat and observing the fascinating family dynamics of our ancient relatives. The emerald rainforests of Rwanda and Uganda are incredible destinations for gorilla trekking, Africa’s most powerful wildlife experience.
Dry Seasons: Jan–Mar & Jun–Oct
The weather is usually mild and dry from January to March, and most of the safari crowds are absent. June to October is safari’s high season, and Tanzania’s major parks like the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara are busy but weather conditions are fantastic. It’s a great time to climb Mount Kilimanjaro and if it’s a tropical beach getaway you’re after, head to Tanzania’s coast, Zanzibar or other Indian Ocean island retreats between June and March.
Green Season: Nov–Dec
The ‘short rains’ season relieve the dry mid-year winter. Clouds build up in the mornings and break in spectacular, but generally short-lived, showers in the late afternoons. Migrant birds return from the northern hemisphere and resident plains game give birth, which means the predator action is thrilling. Landscapes are green and lush, which makes for the perfect photography conditions.
Migration Season: Dec–Sept
The herds usually cross the Grumeti River in the western Serengeti between about May and July. They then move towards the Mara River in the north to cross into the Masai Mara between about July to October. November’s short rains trigger the herds to move back to the Serengeti to give birth during the calving season from January to March – a period renowned for bitter-sweet predator action.

What’s Included in the Cost?
Most accommodations are all-inclusive; all your meals, snacks, beverages, alcohol (with some exceptions) are part of your room rate. In addition, your game drives, and other excursions like walking safaris and cultural village visits will all be included. To operate in such remote areas at such a high level of hospitality, it takes some serious logistics and often means guest-to-staff ratios of more than 5 to 1. Not to mention many accommodations offer services like laundry, so you can pack light and travel easy.
The only things you’ll have to pay for are special activities (like hot-air balloon rides and spa treatments) and, in some cases, imported spirits. Beyond that, just gratuities for the incredible staff who will make your stay at each lodge so memorable.

What Our Clients Say
Unfogettable trip to mount Meru! - I am so happy, that me and my husband chose Summit Heroes, it was a great trip! Thank you, Babu, for such unforgettable moments! Babu and his staff were reliable... read more and friendly. The food, they provided during the whole trip, was delicious. Sleeping bags were also good (I had Pinguin with comfort temperature -12 and believe me, on the second night it is worth it). My suggestion is not forgetting to take gloves, warm hat and wind and waterproof jacket. I had only softshell jacket and it wasn't enough, when you go at night under the rain with extremely cold wind (Babu saved me and shared his second jacket and hat with me). The last part of the trip is quite hard and takes a lot of energy, but it is worth it 100%. The view on the top is incredible.
one of a kind - i cant wait for next time people!!!! all the serene view of the nature... the feel of new fresh fragrance and chill in the air. i would actually recommend y'all... read more to try the summit heroes expendition and trust you me, you will enjoy.
Exceptional time and Beautifully Experience with Summit Heroes Expeditions - My husband and I come back again Africa and we did the 8 days safari with Summit Heroes Expeditions in October 2017 and could not have been more pleased... read more with the level of organization and attention to details that went into our trip. Menas was very helpful in the planning process and answered all of my emails and questions regarding the trip. He gave us detailed information on each hotel, camp or lodge that we were staying in and I really felt comfortable with booking with a local company.
I cannot speak highly enough about our driver, Zuber. He was personal, organized, experienced and went above and beyond to help us get a true adventurous experience. This trip would not have been the same without him. On the safari, we visited Tarangire Park, Central and northern Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara. The trip was well planned and gave us an opportunity to really see Tanzania and experience the culture and amazing wildlife. It was indeed a wonderful and unique experience, we are looking forward to come back with our children in a few years!!
Overall, I highly recommend booking a safari with Summit Heroes Expeditions the accommodations were great, the staff at each place was so helpful, the Land Cruiser with pop up roof was comfortable and our trip went exactly as planned. Thanks again to the staff or Summit Heroes Expeditions and to Zuber for making this a trip of a lifetime!
Mt.Meru with Summit Heroes - This was a really really great trip - now when my muscles are not sore anymore, and all the difficulties are in the past, I can objectively add my review... read more about an amazing work that guys from Summit Heroes have done.
Menas "Babu" Mwiga and his crew (Ernest the "stomach engineer" is worth a separate mentioning) have put all the effort to cover our needs. They took us to the summit of Mount Meru and back in 3days-2nights trip. For a very affordable price, we got everything we needed in a pretty high standard. We met Babu on the day before the start, in order to check the gear. We were picked up from the hotel in the morning and brought to Momella gate, where all the groups start the climb. Guys did all the papers, we just had to sign in a book. All the instructions for the each next day were given carefully, all the questions were answered. The food and the tea were always exceeding our expectations - always looked as a meal for 4 people, not for 2. Hot water to wash the face and the feet. Pulse and oxygen checks. "Babu" speaks English very well, it was nice to hear some interesting facts about wildlife, the mountain, the guides' and porters' everyday life etc. - just make sure you ask questions to specific topic you're interested in.
To summarise, we are completely satisfied with the service that Summit Heroes crew provided to us, and with the competitive price that we payed for it! If we return to Tanzania one day to conquer Kili, I would definitely go with Summit Heroes and Menas "Babu" Mwiga again! Thanks for the trip guys!!!

Babu made us feel comfortable and took away any worries we had regarding mountain sickness. Wonderfull food, words of motivation, smiles, singing and dancing, taking over backpack when needed, welcoming at the camp with warm water, your tent already standing there... I highly recommend climbing the Kilimanjaro with Babu and his team!
